This club season, join The Side-Out Foundation’s newest initiative 1,000 Strong and launch the 2nd phase of the Side-Out Protocol! Side-Out 2 will expand volleyball’s clinical trial to seven locations nationwide, incorporate additional methods of tumor analysis and increase the number of patient participants.
We challenge your club team to raise $250 for The Side-Out Foundation’s 1,000 Strong campaign! If 1,000 teams nationwide raise $250 per team, club volleyball will be solely responsible for donating $250,000 to the only volleyball-funded breast cancer clinical trial!

Players can apply for Side-Out’s scholarship and community service awards throughout 2013. This year marks the first year for the Side-Out/JVA National Dig Pink® Award! Eligible nominees for the Side-Out/JVA National Dig Pink® Award may also be applying for the SOAP Scholarship and/or SOAP Community Service Awards, but application for either award is not required. Winners of the new award will be determined by peer nomination. To request more details about the scholarship and community service awards, visit side-out.org/ambassador. SIDE-OUT CAMP LOCATOR SERVICE
Last year Side-Out worked with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) to create a volleyball camp locator system so possible participants can search for camps based on location, date, cost, position and skill level. Improving your skills takes knowledge, practice and passion and we are excited to be able to help connect our players with learning opportunities! Interested in learning more? The system is currently undergoing improvements, but it should be ready by mid-February. E-mail us at camplocator@side-out.org and we will get in touch with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
1,000 Strong is an initiative of the Dig Pink Tour. Representatives from The Side-Out Foundation still plan on attending some of the national qualifiers, but more than just wearing pink the second day of play, Side-Out wants to encourage teams to get involved and be one of the 1,000 Strong!
The Side-Out Foundation is closely involved with the allocation of funds and dedicates the majority of donations to translational research for breast cancer, a revolutionary science that aims to achieve bedside treatment as quickly as possible. In addition to research, the foundation also allocates funds to organizations that provide compassionate support for cancer patients and their families. Click here for more details.
The Side-Out Protocol is a breast cancer clinical trial for patients with metastatic breast cancer, and it is funded entirely by the volleyball community. It utilizes the approach of personalized medicine and targeted therapy to recommend treatment regimens for patients.
With phase 1 of the Side-Out Protocol complete, researchers are looking ahead to phase 2, and they are excited about the opportunity to increase the number of research facilities taking part in the study. Data review and statistical analysis of Phase 1 are pending, but phase 2 will incorporate additional methods of tumor analysis and additional patients. It will also add 7 more locations!
Fill out the informational form and your Side-Out regional liaison will contact you to set up a fundraising team page through Side-Out’s own website. Add photos and a message to your potential donors, then share it with your friends and family! You can fundraise solely through your Web page or you can host events with your team and collect funds during the event. Once you’ve reached your goal, contact your regional liaison and if you’ve raised $250 or more, your team will be given a donor number and you will officially be part of the Dig Pink Tour’s 1,000 Strong!
Every team is unique and each one approaches fundraising differently. Discuss options with your team and come up with something that represents you! Below are some ideas to get you going:
> serve-a-thon (ask family, friends and fans to pledge a certain amount of money for each serve a player makes during a serving contest)
> dig-a-thon (ask family, friends and fans to pledge a certain amount of money for each dig made by their team in a game or over the course of several games)
> host a friendship tournament
> collect items and services from local businesses/artists and organize an auction or raffle
> sell Dig Pink Tour shirts
> just ask! Reach out to your family, friends and fans via e-mail, phone or in-person and tell them you are raising money for Side-Out. They can send a check to you or donate online via your team website.
